Navratri Day 5 - Story of Skandamata | Birth of Kartikeya
Today, on the fifth day of Navaratri, maa Durga is worshipped in
the form of Goddess Skandamata. And this day is dedicated to her.
Skandamata consists of 2 words, Skanda, which is another name
for Lord Kartikeya and Mata which means mother. Thus the word Skandamata means
the mother of Skanda or Kartikeya. As is clear from the name, she is another
form of Ma Parvati.
In this form, goddess Skandamata has 4 arms. She is portrayed
holding kartikeya in her left hand and a lotus in her right hand. One of her
left arms is positioned to grant boons or to bless her devotees with grace. She
is also known to have 3 eyes and a bright complexion.
She rides a lion and is seated on a lotus.
